Online Shopping During the Holidays

Tis the Season for Safe Online Shopping

Shopping online has become second nature for many of us – the internet offers convenience not available from other shopping outlets. Two clicks and a package is on its way! Unfortunately, the internet is also convenient for hackers and scammers, giving them numerous ways to access shoppers’ personal and financial information. Scammers who obtain your information can use it for their own financial gain, either by making purchases themselves or selling your information to someone else.

Southeastern Bank, along with the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), wants you to stay protected this holiday season. Check out these quick tips:

  • Do business with reputable online vendors and remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
  • Make sure the website shows https in the URL; the “s” indicates a secure site.
  • Be wary of emails requesting your financial information.
  • Download and begin using Southeastern Bank’s Shazam BOLT$ app for added protection on your debit card; click here to learn how the BOLT$ app can help protect you.
  • Monitor your account(s) and alert us immediately of any suspicious activity.

Have questions?

Call or stop by any Southeastern Bank branch and we’ll be glad to assist you with the BOLT$ app or other inquiries.  The holidays are a time to celebrate and enjoy the season without having to worry about identity theft or other online scams.

Saving for College – How to Make it More Manageable

Graduation is upon us for high school students across the country, and college or post high school education is the next step for many graduates. No doubt a college education can be costly, but according to the U.S. Census Bureau data, someone with a college degree can earn, on average, 60 percent more than a person with only a high school diploma. Southeastern Bank encourages families to start saving for college, as part of the household budge, many years before college funds are needed with these tips:

  • Start saving for college as early as possible. Ideally, start soon after your child is born.
  • Estimate how much you need to save to meet college expenses. Several online calculators can help, including this one from the U.S. Department of Education: www.studentaid.ed.gov – click on “College Savings Calculator”
  • Research your savings options. Some options carry substantial tax benefits or other incentives. Always consider the potential risks, costs and limitations before investing any money:
  • Section 529 College Savings Plan
  • U.S. Savings Bonds
  • Special savings programs offered in your area

Southeastern Bank can help you navigate this important financial plan and decide what works for your family. Even if you can’t set aside the entire amount, what you can save will make a difference. We offer savings accounts and other investment options to give your family a head start on planning your future. Visit any of our 13 convenient locations or give us a call to get started today.
